Potential toxicity from nickel contamination of intravenous fluids.
نویسنده
چکیده
N ickel contam ination of intravenous fluids warrants concern, owing to three specific toxic effects o f Ni2+: (a) cardiac toxic ity , especially increased coronary artery resistance, (b ) oxytocic action on th e u terus, and (c) allergic reactions, since nickel is a common allergen. In ad dition, high concentrations of nickel in in trav en o u s flu ids cou ld evoke n o n specific toxic responses, such as nausea, vom iting, headache, and palp ita tions. Physicians should be especially cogni sant o f po ten tial cardiac toxicity from nickel in intravenous fluids that are ad m inistered to patients w ith acute myocar dial infarction. Most experim ental studies of toxic ef fects of nickel on the heart have been conducted at high concentrations of Ni2+ that would be unlikely to occur in clinical situations. However, recent experim ents by Rubanyi and coworkers1,10,18-23 have dem onstrated adverse cardiac effects of Ni2+ at dosages and concentrations that seem re levan t to m edical practice. In isolated, perfused rat hearts, addition of N i2+ (60 fig p e r L) to th e p e rfu s io n m edium significantly increased coronary

Background and Objective: Marine sediments are the most important component of monitoring the health of aquatic ecosystems. The present study uses sediment quality indices to determine the contamination status in Qeshm ecosystems and to evaluate the toxicity of the elements studied for its organisms. Materials and Methods: Sampling of surface sediments of seven stations was carried out on Qesh...
متن کاملEcological risk assessment using heavy metals from surface sediments of Nayband Bay and Asaluyeh region (Northern Persian Gulf)
The toxicity of heavy metals in sediments of the Nayband Bay and Asaluyeh region and potential ecological risk to sediment organisms assessed. Three stations with different degrees of vulnerability of South Pars Oil and Gas Activities (1: Control - 2: medium affected and 3: severely affected) were selected in the study area. Sediment sampling at each station in both cold and hot seasons (2010) ...

Background and Objective: Considering the toxicity, health and ecological hazards of heavy metals in the environment and the impact on organisms, it looks essential to measure and evaluate their concentrations at the various levels in indigineous ecological strctures. The present study evaluated the concentration of Lead, Nickel, Copper and Zinc and their ecological risk assessment in surface s...
متن کاملNickel, Lead and Zinc Contamination in the Surface Sediments of Agh Gel Wetland, Iran
Background & Aims of the Study: Due to the increased human activities around the Agh Gel wetland, this study aimed to measured accumulations of heavy metals (Ni, Pb and Zn) in the surface sediment samples taken from this wetland. Materials & Methods: Samples were taken from 10 stations and exposed to bulk digestion and chemical partitioning. Finally, Ni, Pb and Zn conce...
متن کاملA comparative study on the effects of warm intravenous fluids, intravenous pethidine, and combined warm intravenous fluids and humid-warm oxygen on hemodynamic parameters after general anesthesia in patients with shivering in the recovery room
Introduction: Pethidine is commonly used to treat shivering after general anesthesia (GA), yet respiratory depression may subsequently occur. Warming methods such as warm fluids and/or humid-warm oxygen inhalation can reduce shivering after GA. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the effects of three different methods on the reduction of shivering and their hemodynamic and respirato...
